Apparently the military needs another combatant command.

This one, though, might actually make sense.

Trent and Peaches break down the proposed four-star command focused on autonomous warfare — unmanned aircraft, robotics, counter-drone systems, networks, software, offensive capabilities, defensive capabilities, and all the other technology that has gone from “cool science project” to absolutely essential on the modern battlefield.

Ukraine made the problem impossible to ignore.

Iran reinforced it.

And every service trying to independently invent, purchase, regulate, fund, and operate its own version of the same technology probably is not the fastest way forward.

A centralized command could mean common standards, dedicated funding, fewer duplicated programs, faster development, better interoperability, and hopefully fewer situations where the Army, Air Force, Marines, and Navy all show up with equipment that somehow still cannot talk to each other.

But there is another side to it.

The military is simultaneously talking about reducing the number of general officers by roughly 20%.

So how exactly do you create a new four-star headquarters without immediately growing another pile of generals, colonels, chiefs, staffs, deputies, directorates, and all the positions required to feed that headquarters?

That leads into a bigger conversation about military bureaucracy, SOCOM funding, Special Tactics, why Special Warfare probably does NOT need to become another assault force, and what SOCOM actually expects Air Force operators to be world-class at.

The answer is pretty simple:

Be exceptional at the capability nobody else can provide.

The guys also get into drone warfare on the Ukrainian front, how difficult it has become to hide from persistent surveillance, civilian police departments using organic ISR, counter-UAS requirements around military installations, and why some of the Air Force’s aviation rules may be making small-drone training unnecessarily difficult.

Also discussed:

Wu-Tang.
Tom Clancy predicting terrible things.
Why there are too many generals.
Why every four-star apparently needs another general standing next to him.
And why Peaches may or may not survive a piss test after sitting inside T-Mobile Arena.
